Welcome! I’m happy you’re here. You can call me Kate, which is one of many nicknames, or Kathryne, which is my full first name. Either way, I’m a self-taught photographer and cook from Oklahoma. I started this blog in 2010 and named it after my canine sidekick, Cookie. Now, we live in Kansas City and work on this blog full-time. I love my job!
You should know that I’m totally obsessed with food. I daydream about new recipes. I devour cookbooks (I even wrote my own). I read up on food policy and nutrition. I love photographing food and hope my photos inspire you to step into the kitchen to cook a delicious, healthy meal.
Above all, I love eating food, especially while in the presence of good company. Good food in good company—does it get any better than that?
I believe that cooking should be fun and recipes, flexible. I choose not to cook meat, so all of the recipes on Cookie and Kate are vegetarian. I believe in eating whole foods, which are foods that are as close to their source as possible. I’m also an avid supporter of the occasional indulgence, and I laugh with friends over drinks as often as possible.
This blog is all about celebrating good food—real, sustainable food that delights the senses and nourishes the body.
About Cookie
Cookie is a jaunty spotted mutt who makes friends everywhere she goes. She is my eager four-legged assistant, my chief crumb catcher and the best companion a girl could ask for.
I adopted Cookie in the summer of 2009. She came with her name and nothing more. Whether she was named for being one smart cookie, or for looking like cookies and cream, the name suits her well.
After five years of referring to Cookie as a “mystery mutt,” I finally caved and ordered a DNA test. My beloved, one-of-a-kind pup is half schipperke and half dachshund/Australian koolie mix.

Kate
Lauren, thank you! :D

I was traveling them KC for work a few weeks ago when I discovered Manifesto. I was entranced with the Beautiful Red Bell, and delighted to find your take on the recipe when I was searching for the ingredients. They were a hit last night!
Kate
Love that bar! Glad you enjoyed this cocktail when you made it at home.
Sonia
I love this blog – I’m a mother of three, working full time and two of my girls have recently turned vegetarian. This blog has been brilliant – we’ve been living off it for a month. I love that it’s seasonal, quick and that you have clearly tested the recipes thoroughly before posting them as they always work well.
We use a lot of your salds for packed lunches as well.
The food is really nutritious, clean and simple to prepare but not boring in anyway.
Thanks from Cambridge in the UK

Kate
Thank you, Sonia! You make my work worthwhile. So glad you all are enjoying my recipes.

Hi Kate,
In the short few months since I’ve discovered your site I’ve been inspired to cook numerous dishes (all delicious) and I’ve certainly noticed that most recipes – even the extra tasty deserty kind – are health-conscious and considered.
So… having recently made the decision to go back to university to begin a BSc I’ve been doing a lot of reading on biology basics… most recently on lipids! It got me to thinking about the foods I eat in my diet, more specifically the ‘good’ (unsaturated) vs ‘bad’ (saturated & trans) oils.
I was horrified to learn that my ‘good fat’ peanut butter was being artificially hydrogenated – to make it last longer and look better on shelf – and I was infact eating a transfat. Suffice to say I’m now happy to pay the extra price for all-natural non-hydrongenated peanut butter. But this revelation prompted me to take a closer look at the few naturally occuring plant-based saturated fats that might be included in my diet, primairily coconut oil, which is about 90% saturated fat. And I noticed that this is often an ingredient (though usually optional) in recipies you post.
After much reading it seems there’s no clear conclusion. Scientists seem to be erring on the side of caution, suggesting that we only use coconut oil “ocassionlly”. While it does boost “good” HDL cholestrol, studies so far have only been short term and therefore we can’t really know how it affects our risk of heart disease.
So that’s my ‘thought for the day’ :) I’m sure many of your readers & followers are well aware of this already but I certainly wasn’t. I won’t stop using coconut oil – it tastes great and is wonderful when I need to do any vegan baking – but I’ll limit my intake and go with proven good-oils like soybean and olive oil.
Cheers,
Ali

(As far as ‘google’ resources goI found this link to be quite helpful:
http://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/coconut-oil
)
Kate
Hi Ali, thank you for sharing! I’m not a doctor or a nutritionist, but I’ve researched coconut oil and believe it’s a healthy fat to cook with in moderation. I’m far more concerned about the vats of cheap, hydrogenated vegetable/soybean oil used to fry food at restaurants than I am about cooking with quality oil of any kind at home. I actually wouldn’t recommend soybean oil unless it’s organic. The latest research on olive oil indicates that it is safe for cooking up to 425 degrees, so olive oil is my go-to oil. I just got my cholesterol checked and it’s remarkably low (both HDL and LDL are in the 70s), so I feel comfortable recommending my recipes to others. They work for me, at least! All just food for thought.

Kate,
I just found this site! Yea! I’m making a list for the store tomorrow to try some of your recipes. They sound really yummy and very healthy. I live on the Kansas side of the city in Overland Park, so I wanted to say Hi.

Kate, I love your curls! Do you put any products in them to lock in those curls?
Kate
Thank you! I do! Tigi curls rock curl amplifying cream, followed by Kevin Murphy’s motion lotion.
Jeni
Kate,
My husband and I recently decided to radically change our diet from meat and potatoes to vegetarian with a little fish for health reasons. I want to say a BIG thank you for your website. I seem to find myself here everyday looking for inspiration. We have tried the Roasted Ratatouille with Spaghetti, Butternut Squash Frittata and and the Portobello and Poblano Fajitas. All of the recipes were easy to follow and so satisfying. We really haven’t been missing the meat at all. This weekend, I am going to attempt your Easy Whole Wheat Pizza, wish me luck I’ve never been very successful with dough but this looks doable.
Kate
Jeni, thank you for saying hello! I’m thrilled to hear that you two are enjoying my recipes! I hope the pizza dough worked out great for you. I always appreciate feedback on my recipes!
Sara Maniez
Hi Kate, I love your blog! I found it via an internet search and am so glad I did:) You have great information and excellent healthy recipes. I think it’s neat that you ordered a DNA test of your dog; I have a mix as well and have often wondered what breeds she is comprised of. Thank you for all your amazing content! Best, Sara
Kate
Thanks for saying hello, Sara! I’m so glad you found my website. The DNA results were so interesting! The test cost me about $80 through wisdompanel.com, if you’d like to settle your mystery!
PatK
I just discovered your blog, and love it! I look forward to trying the Soba Noodle Salad this afternoon, and many more soon. Thank you for your passion and tenacity!!

Hello,
Just happened on your blog and I love it. The recipes and the pictures are fabulous. Currently in Bali doing yoga (I love to be able to write that sentence:-) ). Your blog made me look at going back to Norway not so bad, because then I can make all these delights in my kitchen. Thank you for a wonderful blog. Have a happy day.
Kate
You’re in Bali, doing yoga! Jealous!!! Thank you for saying hello, Katja!
Mia
Love your blog and Cookie is the cutest puppy I have ever seen!! :) Love, Mia xo
Kate
Thank you, Mia! :)
Phyllis
Kate: I just recently found you!!!! I probably have downloaded most of your recipes. Have you published a book – it would be so much easier than having lots of paper in a folder. Thank you for all your blogs/insights into your life. Love Cookie!!!
Kate
Hi Kate, so glad you found my blog! Thank you for saying hello! I haven’t published a book yet, but I am working on one!!!
Jen
Hi Kate & of course Cookie,
I ate vegetarian for nearly a decade & after 15 plus years (and declining health), I am returning to a mostly plant based diet. Your blog has been my go to for meal ideas and inspiration for quite some time now. Thanks for all you do to make meal time something I look forward to again.
Jen
Kate
Jen, thank you for saying hello! So glad you found my blog. I hope my recipes help you feel better!
Erica
Hi Kate,
I have been having upper GI issues for the past few months and refuse to take pills forever. I’m only in my thirties and I know I need to change my diet so here I am (exhausted and sluggish on my first day without coffee and processed protein bars). Your gluten free vegetarian food looks delicious and healthy. I’m excited to start this new lifestyle! Tonight’s dinner: West African Peanut Soup!
Erica
Kate
Hi Erica! I hope you start feeling better soon! I’m sure a more wholesome diet will help.
Agatha Esterhuizen
Dear Kate
Came across your blog perchance and just LOVE it. I was looking for a radish recipe and found your radish pickles recipe. I made it with my freshly harvested radishes from my veggie garden. It tastes yummy! Chopped it, didn’t do your nice fancy slim slices, as the ants got hold of the radishes and I had to cut away quite a bit of skin. The normal issue when you try and not use pesticides in your veggie garden. I hope you don’t mind that I added a link to your blog on my recipe group on Facebook https://facebook.com/groups/tradSArecipes/. Keep up the fabulous work!
Kate
Hi Agatha! I’m so glad you found my blog. Thank you for sharing my blog with your group!
Donna
Googled kale salads and found your blog. Your words and your viewers’ comments make me really want to eat better, especially your salad recipes. So I’m taking back grocery shopping and cooking from my dear husband today, and we’re having kale salad for dinner. I know it will be delicious! Thanks so much.
Kate
Thanks, Donna! So glad you found my blog. I hope your kale salad turned out great!!!
Sasha
Hi Kate, greetings from Canada!
I have to say, your blog has pleasantly surprised me! My fiancé and I usually gravitate towards the Brits (Jamie, Rick Stein, Hugh Whittingstall) for cooking inspiration, so when I stumbled across your bog I was instantly refreshed and re-inspired. Your recipes are delicious, (usually!) healthy, and all-around feel good. We love to cook, but had been lacking our usual culinary pizazz as of late. That’s changed now because of you!
Thanks for reminding us (me in particular) of why we cook. Hanging out in the kitchen cooking with our salsa playlist on repeat and a smokey pinot noir is what makes us happy. You brought us back!
Kate
Thank you, Sasha! So glad you two are finding inspiration from my blog. Wish I could clink wine glasses with you!
Linda
Kate – thanks for your beautiful blog – just discovered it while looking for a lentil soup recipe. We really enjoyed the soup to tonight! Delicious!
Kate
Hi Linda! Thank you for saying hello. So glad you enjoyed that soup. It’s one of my favorites!
Mariah Harvey
Hey Kate! I’m always a fan of your blog. I am coming to visit Kansas City next month, and possibly move there if plans work out. Any recommendations for delicious restaurants and/or things to do? Best always, Mariah
Kate
Hi Mariah! That’s exciting! Definitely visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum while you’re here. It’s free to the public! Loose Park is one of my favorite places, too, if it’s nice outside. Areas to check out include the Rivermarket, Downtown, the Crossroads (artsy area), Westport (hip area with lots of local restaurants) and the Plaza (great shopping). My favorite restaurants are The Rieger, Gram and Dun, Westport Cafe (more for drinks than the food), The Mixx (epic salads) and Westside Local. Here are a couple of guides you might find helpful, on Foodie Crush and Design Sponge.
Rachael
Kate, I love your website! I am just starting with food blogging and your photography tips are excellent. I have a Canon DSLR and the tips are much appreciated. I, too, have a mutt and am thinking about DNA testing. :)
Kate
Thank you, Rachael! I used Wisdom Panel to test Cookie’s DNA and it was probably the best $80 I ever spend. Curiosity satisfied!
Olga
Kate, just sending you my compliments. Very beautiful blog! I switched to vegan diet recently, so now I’m adapting my cooking. Will certainly search for inspiration here!
Kate
Olga, thank you for saying hello! I hope you find some new favorites here.
colin
Excellent site; good recipes But PLEASE use centigrade temperatures.
No-one in the world. except the USA (& maybe Canada) uses Fahrenheit.
Kate
I’ll try to do better about that!
Brittni F
Good for you, Kate! This website is absolutely wonderful! I am not a vegan, or vegetarian, and I never subscribe to food blogs. But you had me at your lentil soup! I am actually doing an assignment for school on my favorite healthy recipe, and I am focusing on your vegan lentil soup as my topic. I love that I can incorporate more meatless meals into my dinner rotation with a ton of amazing meals to choose from. Keep up the great work. I love seeing someone doing so well at what they love. And your website and pictures are absolutely beautiful! Two thumbs way up!
Kate
Thank you, Brittni! How awesome that you picked my lentil soup for your assignment. :) Thank you for your note!
BRIANA
——Kate
I must agree with BRITTNI F on how great of a job you have done on this website! I typically don’t subscribe to blogs or even feel an emergence to comment, but for awhile now, I have seen and sensed how much of your efforts have gone into the making and upkeep here, so I felt with it being the holidays, it was time to share some love with some positive thoughts. I too am self taught in many areas, including photography and cooking, and I see how talented you are, not only in your ability to put together a website that flows amazingly from fonts to photos, but your meals! You have great taste & imagination, it’s awesome to see true passions expressed/represented with such success! As many of us know, things these days have the tendency to become quite complicated, your site is able bring a little bliss and enjoyment for the simple things in life, truly motivating no matter how busy a day has been. My 6 yr old daughter and I are total “foodies”, and although we do not live a vegetarian specific lifestyle, we try keeping it balanced through the weeks—the more veggie foods, the better we feel!
P>S: My daughter enjoys sitting in on little moments when I browse through your site, and she believes, your little Cookie does look cookies+cream’ish.. (:
Thank you much!
Cheers & Happy Holidays!!
Kate
Hi Briana, thank you so much for your kind words! They are very much appreciated. Cookie says hi to you both, and happy holidays! :)
Dave

Hi Kate,
Came across your blog last year and tried the Roasted Berry and Honey Yogurt Popsicles. They were delicious! Back this year for more and looking forward to trying out some of your soba noodle recipes, among others. Thank you!
Kate
Thank you for saying hi, Anya! I’m glad you enjoyed the popsicles and hope you like the soba noodle recipes just as much!
Anne Peretti
Found your blog 3 days ago and LOVE it! It just seems so real and down-to-earth compared to some of those “cutesy” blogs. I’m a senior citizen and your ingredients tend to be available and affordable. And I’m in love with Cookie–thanks for creating this wonderful blog!!!
Anne
Kate
Belated thank you, Anne! I’m delighted that you found my blog and appreciate my work. I am very purposeful in my ingredient selection and always aim to be real and approachable. Cookie says hi! :)
Kami
Cookie and Kate,
I was searching for an interesting lentil salad today and ran across your lemon lentil and chickpea salad… Perfection!! I can’t wait to make it for lunch today. I’m so excited to have found your blog, as a vegetarian (and dog lover!), these are exactly the types of recipes I LOVE. Thank you! Can’t wait to try many more! :)
Kate
Thank you, Kami! I’m so glad you enjoyed that one, and that you found my site in the first place!
Michael Van Doren
Wonderful curry coconut kale and sweet potato recipe! I happened to add @ 2T of red wine vinegar just for a little improve (jazz) or was it because it was Valentine’s weekend?! Also I did not have enough kale so half of my greens were Bok choy and it sure didn’t hurt it any. Thanks Kate for putting together a keeper/repeater that my wife and I enjoyed greatly.
Kate
Thank you, Michael! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the curried kale and sweet potatoes. Thanks for letting me know!
Michael Van Doren
I meant improv not improve!
Caitlin
Hi Kate! Thank you so much for sharing so many delicious & healthy meal inspirations. Your blog has become the only one I turn to when I’m stuck on dinner ideas for the week. As someone who rarely follows a recipe exactly because I tend to just use what I have on-hand rather than buying anything special at the store, I find that I almost always have all the ingredients in stock to whip up one of your amazing creations. Thanks for making mealtime simple & easy, as well as tasty & nutritious!
Kate
Thank you so much, Caitlin! That’s music to my ears. :) :)
Andrea Escobar
Love your blog. Inspired by the recipes and photography!
Kate
Thank you, Andrea!
Anthony
Hi Kate,
Wonderful blog; congrats on a simple and elegant design, great photography and scrumptious recipes. I made most of your Feb 2016 suggestions (the Brussel sprouts pizza x4), and enjoyed them all.
I would guess you have helped a great many people become vegetarians; it’s blogs like yours that carry on the traditions of the Moosewood Cookbook and the Vegetarian Epicure, where I first learned what vegetarian cuisine could really be.
Great work all around, and thank you !
Anthony
Kate
Thank you, Anthony! I really appreciate it. I’ve spent SO many hours on the design and photos! Thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the February recipes and hope you’re enjoying my March suggestions now! Thanks again for your kind words.
Troy
Hi Kate,
Like your blog and recipes. I am using one of your fresh green salad recipe for my daughters wedding. I was born and raised in Kansas City and now live in Piedmont Oklahoma which is between Oklahoma City and Kingfisher. Miss The Plaza !
Kate
Thank you, Troy! Happy to hear that my salad will make an appearance at your daughter’s wedding. I’ve stopped in Kingfisher a million times on the way to visit my grandparents in Woodward, so I’ve been close! The Plaza is as lovely as ever. :)
Rebecca L
Your recipes look delicious! I was curious how you avoid gluten cross-contamination when you cook for your gluten-free friends. Some gluten-eating friends offer to cook gluten-free for gatherings, but I’m so paranoid about possible contamination from appliances, cookware & utensils, and it doesn’t take much to make a celiac or sensitive person sick, I was hoping you have some tips.
Kate
Hi Rebecca, that’s a good question, and I’m guessing you’re far less likely than the average bear to cross-contaminate since you’re so cautious about it! None of the gluten-free friends that I regularly cook for are celiac, and I’m sure they encounter small traces of gluten here and there at restaurants (it’s really impossible to avoid entirely). I just do what you do and try to clearly label what’s not gluten free and be aware of serving utensils and whatnot. The easiest thing to do is just serve an entirely gluten-free meal.
Leonor
What is the difference between almond meal and almond flour?
Kate
They’re often the same thing, but sometimes the meal still has the almond skins on it so you’ll see little specks of brown in there and/or almond meal can be a bit more coarse. Both almond meal and flour vary by brand.
Richie
Hi Kate and Cookie,
This is probably the best banana bread I’ve ever tried in my entire life. I surprised my wife with it when she came home from work. The banana bread was moist and light. I used organic maple syrup and added fresh organic blue berries. It was awesome. And I also love your pictures. Five stars for you and Cookie.
Bethery
Whenever I visit your site, I have to come to this “about” page to see the picture of Cookie. So cute!
Kate
Love that! :)
Kodee Shane-Channon
Hi Kate! And Cookie! I’m so glad I found your blog. It sprung up in my iPad newsfeed one day. I was pretty excited. We have very similar taste buds.
I’ve been a vegetarian since the age of 12. Self converted the summer before the 7th grade started. Also, I was born and raised in Tulsa! Love finding other Vegetarians from Oklahoma!
I recently moved into a house with one hell of a kitchen. All the bells and whistles at my disposal. And every piece of equipment I could ever hope for. This has got inspired me to seriously work on my food game. And I am cooking my way through your blog.
You’ve inspired me! And I love your fur baby! I have a chihuahua named Bentley.
Thanks for being awesome.
Namaste!
Kodee
Kate
Thank you for saying hi, Kodee! I’m glad my blog popped up in your newsfeed! I was just in Tulsa for a wedding and remembered how much I like it. I’m so jealous of your new kitchen! My rental kitchen is about to get the best of me. Please put it to good use for me! :)
Amanda
Hello! I also live in KC and I LOVE your blog! I look forward to your emails and make dishes off of your archives all of the time. They always turn out great! Kate
Thank you for saying hi, Amanda! Hope we run into each other sometime. Congrats on your new blog, that’s really exciting!!!

I went Full Vegetarian about a month ago, lost 10 pounds just in doing that, and feel 15 years younger.
Tonight I discovered your blog in search of Vegetarian Recipe Ideas.
The creativity of the recipes, the anecdotes, and everything else are amazing.
Kate
Belated thank you, Lance! I’m so glad you found my blog, and happy to hear that vegetarianism is treating you well. Happy cooking!

Hey Kate, it has been three years now that my friends and family are grateful for the deliciousness of your recipes :) I think I made your West African peanut soup 10 times! Absolutely yummy. Can’t wait to get your cookbook!

Kate
Thank you, Daniel! I’m so glad you appreciate it. :)
Aneta
I love your recipes and your dog too!! :-)
Kate
Thank you, Aneta! Cookie says hi.
Rhonda
Um….but your hair. Can we talk about that for a minute? Do you have any tutorials on how to make THAT magic happen?? It’s gorgeous!
Kate
Aw shucks, thanks Rhonda. It’s naturally curly, but I fixed up the frizzy parts that day with a curling iron held vertically. I swear by Tigi’s Curls Rock curl amplifying cream and a blow dryer with a diffuser.
Gayathri
Hi Kate,
I’ve only tried your banana bread recipe because it was linked somewhere else (with due credit to you of course). But I just took a quick look around here and absolutely love your work !!
Hoping to make some of these lovely dishes soon !
Thank you for your effort and time in giving us this blog.
Regards,
Gayathri
Kate
Belated thank you for your hello, Gayathri! I hope you have enjoyed the recipes.

Hi Kate,
I discovered your blog today at work, looked at your corn/black bean taco recipe, and got the ingredients on the way home. Going to make it tonight. I eat very little meat, for humane reasons, and am always on the lookout for meatless recipes. Yours look great. And Cookie is a bonus – such a cute doggie! I have two mutts, Wilson and Audrey, and they are good kitchen floor cleaners, too!
Mary
Kate
Hi Mary! I’m sorry I missed your comment until now. I hope you loved the tacos. Cookie sends her best to Wilson and Audrey.
Jay
I just discovered your blog and it is love at first sight..
When I first started cooking I was in love with Molly Katzman’s cookbook – for some reason your style reminds me of her’s.
Your blog is just so fantastic and I want to try all yoru recipes. I will be sure to try your plum crisp first as my trees are full of juicy plums!
Veronica Jones
Not sure how I came across your blog but I’m so glad I did. There are so many times when I get stuck not know what make for dinner with my veggies. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with all the recipes out there. Thanks for your blog!
Kate
I’m glad you found my blog, too, Veronica! Thank you for saying hi!

Just a quick comment to say my family LOVES your Sweet Potato Burrito with Avocado Salsa! We have it at least once every two weeks! My daughter even chose it for her 14th Birthday Party Dinner. Her friends loved it, as well! Thanks so much for posting it!
Kate
Thank you, Anatastia! I’m so glad you all enjoy the burritos. Happy belated birthday to your daughter!
Rachel
Hello Kate!
Thank you for your wonderful recipes! I can’t tell you how many of them I have tried and shared with family and friends.
I am stopping in Kansas City later this summer (for the first time!) on a cross-country road trip, and I was wondering if you had any recommendations for vegetarian-friendly restaurants in your hometown?
Kate
Hi Rachel! Thank you for saying hi. KC is pretty awesome. My favorite restaurants are The Rieger, Gram and Dun (best patio on the Plaza, not tons of vegetarian options, but awesome French fries app), Westport Cafe (more for drinks than the food), Ça Va (super cute little Champagne bar in Westport), Beer Kitchen (also in Westport, great brunch!), The Mixx (epic salads) and Westside Local. Manifesto is a speakeasy in the basement of The Rieger (enter through the door on the back of the building) with great cocktails and a cool ambience. Check their website for reservation details. Go to Glacé for amazingggggg ice cream (it’s near Loose Park/The Mixx) or Little Freshie (Westside area) for fun natural snow cones/sodas/floats.
Robert Briffa
Wow, that was a long way down the page to leave a comment. First off, i love your site. I have been vegetarian for only a short while and found your site soon after. The amount of help your site and recipes have given me in staying on my healthy living plan has been incredible. I am still cooking in bulk your spicy lentil soup and still loving it, amongst other delicious treats found on your site. And i love Cookie. It helps that she is part Australian though, but a gorgeous animal none the less. Also as a healthy male i would like to see more cooking videos with you and Cookie. That might be fun. Only if you have time of course. You must be busy. Thank you for your hard work and this quality and helpful site Kate.
Kate
Thank you for your kind words, Robert! Cookie is a beauty, I agree. :) I’m going to work on some videos with my brother soon. Have a great day!

Found your blog from a new coworker who heard you speak while he was working for a company in Tampa that deals with bloggers and self employed people. I mentioned that I want to start a food blog and just bought my domain name. He mentioned that I should look at your site and I love all of the tips that I am seeing and I will definitely be using them, if I get the guts to go through with this!

Karen, I’m glad you found my blog! Best of luck with your food blog—I think you should go for it!

Hi Kate and Cookie! I found your blog recently when I was looking for more creative vegetarian meals. I made your lentil and cauliflower tacos with the chipotle sauce – delish!! Looking forward to trying more of your recipes. On a side note – we used to have a Schipperke – I read that Cookie is part Schip – they are amazing little dogs! They have no clue they’re little and can be quite feisty..so it’s probably a good thing that she’s mixed LOL. Also, they can have quite long life spans – so here’s hoping Cookie will too! :)

Hi Kate!
I stumbled upon your blog many weeks ago and have been cooking many of your recipes! Your site has now become my go-to spot for recipes and I wanted to say Thank You!
My husband and I recently made a lifestyle change to Whole Foods and Plant Based Nutrition and your recipes are a perfect match for delicious food and nutrients for us!
I am a Kansas City Native now living in NYC.
Your recipes make my end of the day late meal healthy, delicious and easy! Just made your Colorful Beet Salad recipe and already want to make it again tomorrow (maybe next week!) :)
Best,
Meghan

He Kate,
Thank you for all that you do here! My wife, daughter and I all really enjoy your recipes, we’ve been vegetarian for a long time, but you have for sure taken our repertoire up a notch!
Just a quick question. I was going to make up a batch of your recently posted roasted cauliflower tonight, but while at the market I saw a spice that intrigued me: Ethopian Berbere. I ended up making a recipe I found for Berbere Cauliflower, with an amazing sauce made of Berbere, vegan butter, salt, and lemon juice. It was delicious, but I think your method of roasting the cauliflower would work a lot better, and I would probably use coconut milk next time. I LOVED the spice though, and searched your site to see if you have used it in anything. Nothing came up, have you ever used Berbere?
I think your skills are a step ahead of anyone else I’ve found on the web, I would be very curious how you would put the spice to work if you ever dabbled in it!
Thanks!
Henry

ps, I’ll put the recipe I found in the website link below. (I also skipped the bacon on it)

Hi Kate,
First off, I love your recipes! I’m grateful for the recent collection of Thanksgiving recipes – I’m looking for something to make for my sister, who is newly vegetarian, and the Butternut Squash Risotto sounds delicious.
Second, my name is Katye, and I spell my full first name Kathryne as well!!! I’ve never found someone else who does, so I’m pretty excited :) I’ve been using your recipes for a few years now, so it was delightful to find that connection.
Thanks,
Katye
Deb
Trying your healthful version of cranberry sauce this year. I just can’t bear to put sugar in my food or my body. Love a good c-sauce. I’ll let you know what the hubs thinks. Not too much to go wrong here. :)
Thanks!
Lindsey
I came across your blog while googling “sugar free banana bread,” and I’m so glad I did. I tried your healthy banana bread recipe, but I omitted the honey/syrup, used unsweetened soy milk, and I folded in a bit of 85% cocoa dark chocolate into the mix. Came out GREAT!! Thanks so much!
Helena
Whenever I’m looking for something delicious and on the healthy side I come here and everything is just so tasty! The banana bread is now an all the time staple in my freezer :) And it helps that you have a super cute dog too! ❤️
Kaitlyn
Hello!
I have been making some of your recipes for a while now (made your healthy banana bread tonight as it’s a household favorite!), and I have a dear friend who also absolutely loves baking. Her wedding is coming up, and I am looking for the perfect gift. So, I came here in search for a cook book. I was wondering if you have any available or if you have ever thought about publishing one.
Thanks so much
Kate
Hi, Kaitlyn! My book, Love Real Food, is going to be released in May of this year. You can pre-order it from Amazon, though I’m not sure if it will be in time for your friend’s birthday! Thanks so much.
Miriam

Andi Abigail
Hi Kate,
I like your website, I have used a handful of your recipes as I have turned a new leaf and become a vegetarian.
However, I have a complaint about something regarding your website. Recently you added an “Our Videos” section to your webpage, and for some reason, the video forces my browser to scroll up to that video every time it starts over. It has become very bothersome and it is making me not want to use your website.
Can you please fix this very annoying video so I can continue using your great recipe pages, stress free?
Thanks and appreciation for your dishes,
Andi
Kate
Hi Andi, I’m really bummed to hear about your negative experience on my site. I’ve put many, many hours into designing this website and that shouldn’t be happening! I talked to my ad guy and he said that sometimes a bad ad will sneak in and cause that behavior. Ad serving is really complicated these days so it’s not easy to track down the problematic ad but I hope it’s stopped happening for you by now. Please let me know if you’re still having trouble. If you are, it would be super helpful if you could send a screenshot or tell me the brand name for the ad that’s shown after the scroll. My email address is hello@cookieandkate.com. Sorry again!

Big Loser program at work… online looking for 11week meal plan. Found your page. Beautiful, wonderful, fantastic. Appreciated the fact that you made a program easily print recipes. Thank you, for having so many varied dishes to choose from. Maybe your sight will be visited after 11weeks.
Kate
I hope you do!
chris
Thanks for sharing! This is by far the best way to cook steel-cut oats that I have found.
Kate
Wonderful!
Kate
You’re welcome, Chris!
Dan
Found your chilli recipe! Fantastic, all my friends love it. Keep on cooking!
Kate
Thanks, Dan! Glad you found my blog.

Hi Kate, Stumbled across your great site and glad I did! The recipes look great! I’m going to try the kale and coconut one this weekend. Cute pup you have there too!
I put out a newsletter that goes out each Friday morning and every week, I include a vegetarian or vegan recipe. I’d love to link to your site on occasion to feature a recipe. The link below is a sample of what my newsletter looks like and how I link to the blogger’s site for the recipe. Just let me know if this is okay. Best, Rick

Kate
Hi, Rick, Thank you for the kind comment! Please make sure your recipe feature follows the guidelines of my photo policy: https://cookieandkate.com/cookie-and-kates-photo-and-recipe-policy/. Thanks!
Rick Fingerman
Absolutely. I’m featuring your Lentil Baked Ziti this upcoming Friday. I’ve been on a vegan recipe posting bent lately so I’m sure my readers will be grateful to see some real cheese!
I’m also a fan of the Newman’s Own products. Paul Newman was a great humanitarian as well as a great actor.
Bubu
Hey Kate:
Its not always easy to find sweet recipes which are tasty, beautiful and still very healthy but you did it!!!!
I also LOVE how you have a Notes section which allows flexibility for Vegans, Gluten Free baking, Dairy Free etc. Your blog has revolutionized the way I cook. I’m trying out a gluten free diet for my son and SO happy I can still use your recipes . Thank you a million!Everyone in our household loves your recipes :)
Kate
So kind of you, Bubu! I’m so glad my blog has made things a bit easier with all of the dietary needs in your house. Thanks for reading!
Debby
Hi! I’m writing a paper for my Health, Wellness, and Safety class for LUO. I am trying to create 5 days of 3 ingredient snacks for 3 year-olds by combining fruits and veggies. For one day I combined snow peas, strawberries, and mango. They have different textures and the children can cut their chunk of mango and strawberries themselves. Can you help me with some more ideas? I’ve been using Google and found your blog.
Thank you!
Debby
Kate
Hi Debby, that sounds like a fun assignment. Maybe carrots, apples and broccoli? Oranges, blueberries and red bell pepper?
Carissa
I stumbled upon your blog once quite some time ago. Ever since then, I have found myself coming back to visit time and again to browse and try new recipes! I have not been disappointed yet! Love finding tasty recipes that promote healthy moderation, flavor, and whole foods!
Kate
This is so kind, Carissa! Thank you so much, and I’m so glad you found my blog.
Becky
Hi! I thought I’d share that ever since I decided to cook vegan at home I use your blog as inspiration! I have cooked so many amazing recipes from it and love reading it for new ideas when I have free time. Thanks :)
Kate
So kind of you, Becky! Thank you for reading. :)
Donni Blair
Hi Kate! Thank you for making vegetarian food that tastes good. Your photos make each dish appealing, even those that contain ingredients I’m not inclined to try. Being a vegetarian for 25+ years meant that I was uncreative in my eating, sticking to a mostly bread and cheese diet. NOT healthy! It was either that or embrace the whole macrobiotic thing that just did not ring my bell. Either you and I have the exact same taste in food, or you’ve brought to life my taste buds! Such great sauces and fresh veggies – yummers! Thank you for inspiring me to eat healthier!
Lisa
Thanks for the great recipes!! By chance I came across your website looking for a red thai curry recipe, then I saw your dog!! She is a SPITTING image of my Blue whom we rescued about 7 years ago. We were told he was an Australian Shepherd mix, but we always wondered what he could be mixed with. The only difference is Blue doesn’t have a tail.
She is beautiful!!
Melanie
Thank you for these amazing recipes. I think that you’re blog is a great idea.
P.S. your dog is adorable
Kate
Thank you, Melanie! Cookie says hello. :)
RachelH
I found your blog a few months ago and fell in love with the food you are making (and Cookie)! My carnivore husband’s new favorite soup is the Mexican Quinoa Stew. He has asked for it at least once a week since I first made it!
Your cookbook just arrived, and it’s really beautiful. We’re excited to try all the recipes. I just wanted to say that the book looks really beautiful!
Kate
This is so kind of you, Rachel! I’m so glad your family enjoys the soup, and I hope you love the book!
Melanie Cruz
Hi:) I have never followed blogs and never (until now) comment on them. But I think I will be fan of yours because of those great recipes and your nice life philosophy.
Kate
That’s so kind of you, Melanie, thank you!
Jeanne
Made your roasted cauliflower, farro, and arugula salad with tahini dressing from your cookbook today for Fourth of July celebration. I am gluten free, so I used quinoa instead of farro. Everyone was losing it over how delicious this salad was. My niece exclaimed, “You make THE BEST salads.” Glad to add this to my list of THE BEST salads!!
Kate
Hooray! I am so glad you enjoyed the salad, Jeanne! That’s one of my favorites, too.
Michelle
Hi Kate & Cookie,
Michelle and my Persian cat Gabby here (literally she is right here while I type).
I just came across your amazing blog while I was looking for a gluten free waffle recipe. I recently was at the best gluten free restaurant while on vacation in Florida. They had eggs Benedict on a gluten free waffle. This was right up my alley since I have been a vegetarian for 20 years but recently went gluten free for health reasons. I am hoping to recreate this at home and now I am one step closer due to your blog. I am not a cook, but since I am a teacher I have some time to experiment this summer. Your blog will be my go to. Luckily my fiance will eat almost anything which makes experimenting so much easier.
Thanks so much for all the specific information you include.
Michelle & Gabby
Kate
Oh, I’m so glad you + Gabby found my blog! I hope you can make a close approximation to that eggs benny dish–it sounds amazing.
Sue
Hi Kate!
I recently received a copy of your cookbook as a gift – it is beautiful! Your recipes have inspired me to step into the kitchen (which I had previously found to be a daunting place) and try new things. :-)
Also, having previously lived in (and loved) Kansas City, I have been living vicariously through your blog (and Gimme Some Oven)….so thank you!
Kate
Aaah! I’m so glad you like the book. Hello from KC!
Elaine Wiggins
I just dropped by to compliment you on your wonderful site here! All of your recipes are so beautiful, healthy, and wonderful! I have been following your blog for about a month now and have tried several recipes. I also just bought your cookbook last night and have already read through half of it and dog eared most of it lol. Your style of cooking is so me! I was a strict vegan for 6.5 years but for very personal reasons have begun to include some local/pastured/organic dairy and eggs back into my diet here and there though not everyday, and am trying to be a little more flexible with food while keeping it as whole and real as possible. I really appreciate your open ended and nonjudgmental/nonshaming approach to vegetarian food and health. Kudos to you for all the work you have put into your site and your cookbook!
Sean
Yes everything Elaine said. I told my wife that I’ll make every recipe in the cook book (last night we dined on the burrito bowls and margaritas and she was in love) and she agreed I should (and she’s not even vegetarian like me)
Kate
This is just the sweetest comment, Elaine! Thank you for taking the time to write it. I’m so glad you found the blog, and really happy that you dig the book so much! I’ve definitely had a complex relationship with food (as many of us have, I think!) and so keeping things non-judgmental and making my readers feel empowered to make their own choices is really important to me. Thank you so much for your kind affirmations! I’m so happy to have you here.
Kaysha
I’m so excited. Searching for a vegetarian tortilla soup, I came across your blog. Curious about where it came from, I ended up here, and am even more excited about it. I am a pescatarian and my dog Hank is also a rescue, and we also cook, and do photography, and create many many things together. Love the cookbook idea, I’m looking forward to trying some more of your veg recipes!
Arpita
Your blog has the nicest, sweetest name i have ever come across! And i love the recipes you share! :)
Maha
Hello, yes i am a fan too.. you look lovely and your Cookie too..
What do you feed your dogs? I give mine chicken and sometimes beef with carrots and zucchinis and pasta or rice , sometimes dry food but that is “artificial” food since it is industry food so i was just wondering what do you feed your dogs?
Thank you for all so nice recipes
Kate
Hi Maha! I currently feed Cookie a brand of dry dog food called Organix that I buy from Whole Foods or Amazon. That, and she gets lots of veggie scraps (no onions/garlic/grapes, though).
Josh Williams
Hello Kate! My name is Josh, I’m a general contractor/ home remodeler in Seattle. My girlfriend, Raquel, is vegetarian, and would be vegan except for that cheese addiction she can’t shake. I would say that I am vegetarian between steaks. While I’m able to easily find vegetarian food that tastes good, I always have a hard time finding vegetarian dishes that satisfy me such that I don’t feel I need to augment those meals with an egg or a side of fish or something. So I made this enchilada recipe, including the homemade sauce, and am happy to report that it was all an absolute delight. The taste was incomparable (cinnamon? Who would have thought, but it was perfect), and I didn’t feel like I needed to wash all those veggies down with a turkey sandwich afterward. I needed to write and tell you that you have a new set of fans here in the Pacific Northwest: Raquel , Lou (Jack Russell), Chloe (Cockapoo), and me. We will continue to seek you out. Thank you! Oh yeah…FIVE STARS!!!
Kate
Hi Josh! Thank you so much for your note. I’m so glad you found my blog and hope you find more recipes to enjoy soon. All my best to you and Raquel and pups!
Marlene Dominguez
Just made the famous Favorite Quinoa Salad. Supper yummy and so simple to make thanks again Kate your the Best :)

Shirley Boock
I am an avid cook and love organic, healthy and sometimes not so healthy recipes to please the people I love. I look at recipes for ideas but ultimately adjust them to my liking. Rarely do I follow a recipe fully. I find myself drawn to your site, thank you for the inspiration.
Kate
Thank you for saying hi, Shirley! I’m so glad you found my site.
Michelle
I LOVE your recipes, passion and energy. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with the world. Your elegant style is a really nice touch. Keep up the good work.
