Vegan Caesar Dressing
This tahini-based Caesar dressing is deliciously smooth and tangy. If you need an egg-free or dairy-free Caesar dressing recipe, this is the one!

This vegan Caesar dressing is creamy and flavorful like the classic! Traditional Caesar dressings obtain their silky texture and bold flavor from homemade mayonnaise (made of emulsified raw egg yolk in oil), Parmesan and anchovy, but this recipe is free of all those ingredients. It’s perfect if you need an egg-free, dairy-free option.
What’s in it, you ask? This creamy vegan dressing is tahini-based, with lemon for tang! I’ve tried a variety of other vegan Caesar concepts over the years with ingredients like capers, cashews, nutritional yeast, or vegan mayo, and this version cannot be beat. I’m firmly on Team Tahini over here.
If you’re looking for Caesar dressing that’s closer to the classic restaurant variety, try my mayo-based Easy Caesar Dressing instead.

Vegan Caesar Dressing Ingredients
This pantry-friendly recipe uses simple and nutritious ingredients.
- Tahini: Tahini forms the rich and creamy base for this dressing. Tahini is made of blended sesame seeds and offers a nutty, complex flavor with light umami. No anchovies needed.
- Lemon juice: This dressing is intentionally tangy, and you can tame it with water as needed.
- Extra-virgin olive oil: A drizzle makes the dressing silkier and smoother.
- Garlic: Raw garlic is a key flavor in Caesar dressings.
- Dijon mustard: Dijon mustard adds some pungency and helps emulsify the ingredients (it keeps them blended together).
- Salt and pepper: Salt enhances the overall flavor, and pepper makes this dressing taste more like traditional Caesars.

How to Make a Vegan Caesar Salad
You can turn this salad dressing recipe into a full Caesar salad. Here’s how.
- Bake homemade croutons: My crouton recipe calls for two thick slices of crusty sourdough bread, olive oil and simple seasonings.
- Whisk together the dressing: It’s very simple! You’ll find the full recipe at the bottom of this post.
- Chop your greens: I love to use romaine for a classic Caesar salad, or a mix of half romaine and half kale for extra color, texture and nutrition. If you use kale, you can vastly improve the texture by cutting out the thick ribs before chopping, then massaging it by scrunching handfuls of chopped kale in your hands until they become darker and more tender.
- Toss just before serving: When you’re ready, drizzle enough dressing over the greens to lightly coat them (you might not need all of it). Toss until the dressing is evenly distributed. Add the croutons and toss again, then serve promptly (the croutons and lettuce will wilt over time).
Protein Tip
To add more protein to your vegan Caesar salad, consider adding a batch of my legitimately crispy Roasted Chickpeas—either in addition to the croutons or in place of them. You can also sprinkle on my Easy Vegan Parmesan Cheese, made with protein-rich hemp seeds.

Vegan Caesar Dressing
This tahini-based Caesar dressing is deliciously smooth and tangy. If you need an egg-free or dairy-free Caesar dressing recipe, this is the one! Serve it over chopped romaine and/or massaged kale, with homemade croutons and a sprinkle of vegan Parmesan cheese on top, if you’d like. Recipe yields a generous ½ cup, enough for 4 to 6 side salads made from 5 ounces of romaine and 1 medium bunch of kale.
Ingredients
- ¼ cup tahini
- 3 tablespoons lemon juice (about 1 ½ lemons)
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic, pressed or minced
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ¼ teaspoon fine salt
- 2 tablespoons water
- Freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic, mustard, and salt. Whisk until blended, then add the water and whisk until you have a smooth, blended tahini sauce. Season generously with black pepper (about 10 twists).
- The dressing should be tangy, like classic Caesar dressing. If it’s overwhelmingly tart or too thick to pour, whisk in an additional tablespoon of water. Use as desired, or refrigerate it, covered, for up to 5 days (if it thickens as it cools, thin it with water as needed).
